Gender Bias

If you allow me, I’d like to begin with a question. What do feminism and other fights for progress have in common? I'd summarise my views by claiming that they spark frustration which leads to a divisive conflict within society.

People are outraged at social movements. To remain unbiased, I’d like to illustrate this view with the political trend prevailing across the world. People are blaming inclusiveness for the economic collapse. The far right has successfully triggered a wave of xenophobic populism. Globalisation and migration are being thought to have opened up a Pandora’s box. People have become so intolerant that they openly slam other people online for being different.

The Brexit mayhem led to the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox. The French almost elected a far-right leader as president, especially in outlying areas. These include overseas territories although the concerned party's leaders openly expressed disgust at minorities' festivals and customs, in addition to their better- known aversion to a particular religion. Without further ado, I'd like to end this digression by pointing out that – while they're originally noble – social movements and inclusiveness in a broader sense have been distorted, leading to the unintelligible injustice that people address through violence.

Suffragettes were right to be aggressive given the circumstances then. But, is it fair to assume that males should be blamed for the injustice caused by their predecessors? Are we right to tag people as privileged based on their birth characteristics? Mother Theresa and Subramania Bharati stood up for minorities and the most vulnerable. No one forced them to. On the other hand, some people shamelessly harm their own siblings.

Humans will be humans. We're cruel by nature, and gender is just one way to divide us. Seriously, we discriminate against people for their complexion, ethnicity, religion, weight or even their accent. Sexism occurs both ways. Just like racism! Harming a man on the grounds that he's "privileged" is like harming majority ethnic groups. Such considerations should disappear. We all belong to some majority, be it with regard to ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, educational background or simply citizenship. Who are we to downgrade others' struggles and claim they're better off? Appearances are often misleading and we need to agree that generalisation won't help either way.

In fact, people are intrinsically callous and being radical only conceals the crux of the matter. We don't necessarily need to be different to hurt other people. Women also can harm other women for selfish motives. Women also propagate sexist ideologies when they attack men on their virility when they feel the need to teach them a lesson. Boys and girls alike can be underrated by school teachers based on gender. The status quo is definitely not desirable.

Men and women alike need to realise that rivalry on the grounds of gender is pointless. Being simplistic will only prove destructive since people will only rebel at the slightest provocation. We need to endeavour to achieve harmony and to end gender classification, instead of fighting for our kind.

Social movements need to be subject to development as the situation shows signs of improvement. Otherwise, it becomes irrelevant and unfair by the same token. Landmark struggles should be acknowledged indeed. But being unrealistic will only sustain that conflict which overshadows the heroism of freedom fighters, irrespective of gender. Also, should we fail to realise that, people will continue to be indifferent to injustice on the grounds that the most vulnerable appear to be a bunch of self-seeking individuals. We don't need that!

Instead of engaging in unnecessary conflicts, why don't we advocate an inclusive fight against injustice in all its forms? It's only in unity that we can achieve justice for all.
